5 Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning (and How Often to Do It)

Your home’s ductwork moves the air you breathe through every room, every day. Over time it collects dust, and in some homes, more than dust. So how do you know when it’s actually time for a cleaning — and how often should it happen? Here’s an honest, no-hype guide.

5 Signs It’s Time to Clean Your Ducts

  1. Visible dust blowing from the vents. If you see puffs of debris when the system kicks on, or grime built up around the vent covers, that’s a clear sign.
  2. Dust resettles fast after you clean. If surfaces get dusty again within a day or two of dusting, your ducts may be recirculating it.
  3. Musty or stale odors. Persistent smells when the system runs can point to moisture or mildew somewhere in the ductwork.
  4. Signs of mold. Visible mold growth on or inside vents or HVAC components should be addressed promptly — this is one case the experts agree on.
  5. Pests. Evidence of rodents or insects in the ducts (droppings, nesting, a smell) means it’s time to clean and seal.

How Often Should Air Ducts Be Cleaned?

You’ll see two reputable answers, and it’s worth knowing both:

  • The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning every 3 to 5 years as preventive maintenance — the idea being that removing the dust removes the “fuel” that mold and pests need.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) takes a more conservative view: it doesn’t recommend routine cleaning on a fixed schedule, and instead suggests cleaning as needed — for example, when there’s visible mold, a pest infestation, or excessive debris coming from the vents.

The honest takeaway: there’s no single magic number. Every 3–5 years is a sensible rule of thumb for most homes, but the real triggers are the signs above. Some homes need it sooner — every 2–3 years is reasonable if you have pets (hair and dander build up fast) or household members with allergies or asthma. A recent remodel that kicked up drywall dust is another good reason to clean.

What Duct Cleaning Can — and Can’t — Do

We’ll be straight with you: the EPA notes that duct cleaning hasn’t been proven to prevent health problems on its own, so be wary of anyone promising it will “cure” allergies. What a thorough, professional cleaning does do is remove accumulated dust and debris, address mold or pest issues at the source, and clear out the gunk that can cause odors and restrict airflow. For a lot of homeowners, that means less dust to dust and a system that breathes easier — paired with a good filter and regular HVAC maintenance.

A Better Approach: Clean, Then Seal

Cleaning removes what’s already in the ducts. Sealing helps keep new dust, allergens, and conditioned air where they belong. Together they make a bigger difference than either alone — which is why we look at both when we assess your system.
